Hi, i am new to this forum, and was wondering if anyone would know the best set-up for a 2003 xterra with factory vertical and horizontal racks. I am looking to carry 2 longboards for my daughter and myself. The local surfshop was unsure, and i am trying to do it right the first time. You advice is appreciated. thanks
I wanted a locking surfboard rack for my Nissan XTerra and turns out Yakima Racks and Thule Racks don't have lockable surfboard racks. The Thule 554XT surfboard rack does mount to the Nissan XTerra crossbars and is pretty inexpensive but again it doesnt lock the surfboards. So after asking around someone turned me onto the Inno Racks Surfboard Locker rack. It works on my XTerra bars nicely and it has a very sweet integrated surfboard locking system that locks both of my surfboards, yeah it carries two long boards. FYI, I got it here... http://www.orsracksdirect.com/inno-racks-boardlocker-surfboard-rack.html
Jason,
Thanks for the info. The inno's look tempting, although a little steep $$ wise. Are u satisfied with the locking system? Living in Florida there's a fine line between rideable and flat. wouldnt mind locking the boards on top, but my break is known to have alot of theft and vandalism. (intimidation). whats ur thoughts? Are they worth the $, or just go with the Thule non-locking.
thule surfboard rack does look good i just wish it locked
I'm happy with the surfoboard locking mechanism in it. Obviously I don't feel like it's totally foolproof (what lock really is) but I like it as a theft deterrent when I hit the coffee shop along the way and stuff. I know a few riders that have the Thule surfboard rack . i never asked them specifically about it, but from what I've seen it is easy to load up surfboards and looks like a good solution for factory racks. So if it isnt going to totally stress you out to have a non locking surfborad rack I'd say save the $$$ and go wit hthe Thule one instead...
