yakima lowrider system / loadstops great for carrying lumber on 2003 subaru outback
I really think you're best off using the Yakima Lowrider Complete Roof Rack Base System, which is a multi-purpose base rack that attaches directly to your 03 subaru outback wagon factory rack siderails, creating a strong enough foundation to attach the lumber carrying rack. The Lowrider system includes four Lowrider Towers that clamp onto the subaru outback side rails (the bars that run parallel to each other from the front to back of your rooftop) and also a pair of crossbars that connect to the four Lowrider Towers. You can then connect the lumber carrying rack to the two crossbars. Normally the 48" crossbars are the recommended length for your roof top. However if you believe you will be transporting wider sheets of plywood for example then you'll want to go with the longer 58" crossbars.
So once you have the Yakima LowRider system installed you can then attach Yakima Load Stops directly to the Lowrider base rack front and rear cross bars, allowing you to easily and securely carry your lumber and any other long items. Use in combination with the Yakima Heavy Duty Straps. This setup will offer excellent worry free transport of your lumber and stuff and there will be no side to side play or rocking up and down, front to back of the lumber.
