Got a couple questions about the Yakima Kayak Stacker. Can I attach it to my 2006 Subaru Outback wagon roof rack crossbars or not? Secondly, is I'm confused how many straps I need for carrying three kayaks. It says it comes with a pair of straps but is this enough for all three kayaks or do I need more?
use yakima horizontal mighty mounts for kayak stacker on Subaru Outback roof rack
The Yakima Kayak Stacker mounts to most factory rack crossbars when used in combination with a set of Yakima Horizontal Mighty Mounts. The Kayak Stacker won't connect directly to factory racks, just Yakima round bars and Thule square bars. But the Horizontal MightyMounts are adapters that connect to factory rack crossbars and you then connect the Kayak Stacker to these adapters. For your 2006 Subaru Outback roof rack you'll need the 24H Mighty Mounts. The 24H only fits certain factory rack crossbar styles. I'd use the Yakima Racks online fit guide to find the correct Horizontal mightymount clamps for other car models if you want to transfer the kayak Stacker to another car.
The included pair of straps will hold two kayaks stacked on the same side of the Kayak Stacker. For the third kayak (and fourth if you add another kayak) stacked on the other side of the rack you'll need to order an extra pair of heavy-duty straps. Hope this helps!
Hey just as a heads up some states have laws regarding whether or not you have to tie down the bow or stern or both to your car. If you want to be on the safe side of the law and get some peace of mind I would recommend either Yakima's bow/ stern tiedowns or thule's 855 quickdraw, both sold in pairs.
Yeah I heard about that state regulation in certain places. The good news is both the Yakima Kayak Stacker and Thule 830 'The Stacker' have a pair of bow/stern tie-downs now included. The bad news is that's only good for one kayak. So you'd have to order an extra pair of Thule 855 QuickDraw tie-downs or Yakima Bow-Stern tie-down straps for each extra boat you're carrying.
