i use thule 450 crossroad roof rack & thule 877xt / 878xt for a fj cruiser kayak rack
I can't speak for other Toyota FJ Cruiser roof rack owners, but I'm really happy with my FJ Cruiser kayak rack set up. I'm using the Thule 450 Crossroad roof rack system with the 58 inch bars as my multi-purpose base rack. The bars on the Toyota FJ Cruiser factory roof rack are pretty worthless for using to carry any gear directly on the cross bars I found out. So you mount the Thule 450 to the factory rack siderails (the bars that run parallel from the front to the back of the roof on both sides). The pair of crossbars with the Thule 450 are strong and solid and will then allow you to attach any of the Thule gear carriers to them. For my kayak rack on the Thule 450 crossbars I'm using the Thule 877XT RollerCoaster on the rear Thule crossbar. This allows you to roll the kayak right up onto the rooftop without any hassle. Then I have a pair of the Thule 878XT Set-to-Go kayak saddles on the front Thule crossbar. Just roll the kayak right up and into position in the Thule 878XT then strap the kayak down into both the 878XT saddles and the cradles that are integrated into the 877XT RollerCoaster and you will be able to transport the kayak in any windy conditions, trust me I've been there. Also the Thule 450 can lock to the Toyota FJ Cruiser siderails using a 4 pack of Thule locks. The kayak rack doesn't lock the kayak but I use a pair of kayak lashlock cables to lock the kayak to the roof rack. Awesome so far, knock on wood! Hope this helps anyway.
