I chose yakima farout roof bag for my honda pilot roof rack siderails
I have a Honda Pilot roof rack with just the factory installed side rails on the roof, no crossbars. I went with a cargo bag because I learned that just about all of them don't require crossbars, they'll mount fine to cars with just siderails. Any roof box will need crossbars to connect to, and you'll have to get an aftermarket rack system that connects to the side rails to form a base roof rack setup that includes cross bars. I looked into the Yakima Lowrider setup. But the price for the cargo box and the base rack system was so much more than just a soft bag. I couldn't justify it. I bought the Yakima FarOut soft bag because I needed it for just my boyfriend and me. It straps right to my Honda Pilot roof siderails and it's got enough room for our stuff but it's small enough too to carry it around like luggage. I thought all the other bags would be too big for just our stuff, and they'd flap all around on top of the car because they weren't totally full. If you need a carrier for just yourself or maybe another person too then I'd suggest this for your VW Passat wagon siderails as well.
