Planning camping trip and wondering best cargo rack system for 2001 Ford Explorer
Planning trip this summer to Yukon & Alaska and looking to transport a sizable amount of camping gear, tents etc. I'm expecting four people during the 12 day trip. Looking at possibility of taking extra spare tire too. Not sure what kind of cargo gear rack system would be best for my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport roof rack which does not have crossbars just the side rails.
dont mess with a cargo box / roof bag - get the megawarrior roof basket
Don't mess around with a cargo box or just a roof bag for this camping trip! Go with a burly roof basket. The MegaWarrior roof basket from yakima racks is the one I'd choose. But first you'll hafta install the Yakima Lowrider roof rack base system to your 2001 Ford Explorer roof rack siderails. The Yakima Lowider system includes four Lowrider Towers and two cross bars. The Lowrider Towers connect directly to your side rails and the pair of crossbars connect to the four Lowrider towers. Get the 58 inch crossbars too. This is the size you need for your Explorer roof. You can then mount the MegaWarrior roof basket to the Lowrider round bars. The Mega Warrior roof basket is an awesome general purpose camping/cargo gear carrier. You should also spring for the optional MegaWarrior extension which increases the basket volume by a lot too.
So first things first with this basket rack, you can get the Yakima Spare Tire carrier accessory that lets you carry a spare wheel in the basket. You will still have tons of room left for all you camping gear and luggage. Get the basket stretch net to secure everything down in the basket. A really good accessory is a roof bag that attaches to the MegaWarrior roof basket too. You can put all your gear in it that you don't want to get rain on. The Yakima GetOut Pro roof bag is waterproof and connects right to the basket. Tons of room for luggage and camping gear too.
