my recipe for a 2007 chevy avalanche kayak rack
hey there mikeshelley. There is a kayak rack solution made by Yakima Racks that will work perfectly on your 2007 Chevy Avalanche. First of all get the Yakima DryDock hitch rack. You'll also need to purchase a single Yakima round crossbar to connect to the DryDock (go with the 58 inch crossbar length for carrying two kayaks flat and side by side). Then you're going to need two sets of kayak racks that will connect to the rear Dry Dock crossbar and your Chevrolet Avalanche crossbar. I'd recommend the Yakima Mako saddles / Hully Rollers combination. This kayak rack rules, especially for a pickup truck rack set up and on SUVs and other vehicles where the mount is pretty high up.
This is where you gotta start paying attention, first you'll need to get two sets of Yakima 25H MightyMounts, these are made specially for your 2007 Chevy Avalanche roof rack crossbars. One set will be for the first pair of Mako saddles you attach to the cab roof cross bar. The second set of four 25H MightyMounts will work with the other pair of Mako saddles on the cab roof crossbar. Now you will attach two pairs of the Yakima HullyRollers directly to the DryDock cross bar.
So in sum you'll need the following ingredients:
2 sets of four 25H Mighty Mounts (one set of four works with each pair of Mako Saddles on the cabroof cross bar)*
2 pairs Mako saddles (attach to the 25H MightyMounts that connect to the 2007 Chevy Avalanche roof rack cross bar)**
2 pairs Hully Rollers (attach to Drydock crossbar)
1 Yakima DryDock for 2" hitch receiver
1 Yakima 58" crossbar for the DryDock
*you could also use two sets of four of the Yakima Universal MightyMounts instead of the 25H Mighty Mounts. The Universal Mighty Mounts are handy if you ever need to switch the set up over to a different vehicle with factory roof rack crossbars.
**Most cars only have room for one set of Yakima Mako saddles / HullyRollers combination on factory roof rack crossbars, but the 2007 Chevy Avalanche crossbars are wide enough for two sets to attach side by side for carrying two kayaks.
