you'll need a q tower multipurpose roof rack first then add gear carriers
Welcome to Car Rack Resources grubs7 and thanks for the posting! A little explanation is required here. It's important to understand the difference between a multi-purpose base rack system and the various gear carriers that attach to the multi-purpose base rack ssytem. In your case your 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt does not currently have any kind of factory roof rack installed. So I recommend going with the Yakima Q Towers multi-purpose base rack system. This system includes four upright Q Towers, four Q122 Clips (these are made specifically for your car) and a pair of crossbars (the 48 inch crossbars are the recommended length for your car roof). An easy roof rack to install, the four Q Clips connect to the upright Q Towers and these clip onto the specified positions (the installation instructions spell this out clearly) where your roofline and top of the door jambs meet. the pair of cross bars then connects to the four upright Q Towers. You now have a multi-purpose roof rack system installed on your 2006 Chevy Cobalt !!!
The rest is fun and easy. You then get to choose amongst any of yakima racks gear carriers for transporting the various stuff like bikes, skis, canoe, kayak etc. These gear carriers all simply connect to the two Q Tower base rack crossbars.
