Default a couple of options for gear basket and snowboard rack on your 2000 Mazda Protege

You have a couple of options timone...

The first possibility is to use the Yakima BasketCase and orientate it so the long sides are running front to back on the roof. Then use the Thule 575 snowboard rack next to it. You will have plenty of room on the 2000 Mazda Protege for this configuration. You will just first have to attach a multi-purpose base rack system to the Mazda Protege roof top so you can then mount the Thule 575 snowboard rack and Yakima Basketcase basket rack to the base roof rack system crossbars. You can go with either the Yakima Q Tower roof rack system (use a pair of Yakima Q5 clips and a pair of Yakima Q43 clips along with 48" length Yakima crossbars) or the Thule 400XT Aero roof rack system (use a set of the Thule 2069 Fit Kit clips and 50 inch length Thule bars). Both are superb base racks and the snowboard rack and basket rack will mount to the base rack crossbars on either system.

The other option is to use either of the base rack systems listed above and then attach the Yakima LoadWarrior basket, for instance, on the base rack crossbars. This gear basket has built-in integrated crossbars on the basket itself, allowing you to then mount any Yakima ski-snowboard racks to these crossbars. So you are combining the basket into both a cargo carrier and a ski rack-snowboard rack without having to worry about having enough room on the crossbars to attach them next to each other. Instead the snowboard rack piggybacks on top of the roof basket.
