Yeah you will need a multi-purpose base rack system. The Thule 450 Crossroad complete base rack system will fit your 2003 Mitsubishi Montero perfectly. Attaches directly to Mitsubishi Montero factory rack side rails. Includes a set of four Thule 450 Crossroad Feet and a pair of load bars. The 50" load bars are the recommended length for your Montero roof top. You can then attach the ski/snowboard carrier to the load bars.

The Thule 450R Rapid CrossRoad complete base rack system works exactly the same way as the regular Thule 450 Crossroad system except that it uses the elliptical Thule Rapid Aero load bars (the RB53 Rapid Aero bars are the length necessary for the Montero), which are very sleek and aerodynamic offering a more low-profile and modern appearance. You can then attach the ski/snowboard carrier to these load bars too.

Instead of a ski rack you should consider going with a cargo box instead. I suggest going with the Thule 604 Ascent 1600 cargo box. Connects directly to the 450 Crossroad and 450R Rapid Crossroad base rack load bars. The 604 offers excellent cargo volume and is ideal for all your skis and snowboards. Locks included for securing your boards and gear inside the box too.
