Default use the Thule 477 Short Roof Kit with Thule 400XT roof rack on Chevy Silverado

You can definitely carry a canoe on your 2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab model. The key here is to use a short roof adapter in conjunction with the roof rack system. My recommendation is to first go with the Thule 400XT Aero roof rack system. No matter what gear you plan to carry on your pickup truck cab roof, you will need a multi-purpose roof rack base system. The Thule 400XT Aero system includes four 400XT Aero feet, four FitKit 2082 Clips (specific to your Chevy Silverado) and two square load bars (the 58" length square load bars are the recommended length for your cab roof top). You will mount the canoe carrier to the front and rear load bars.

The Thule 477 Short Roof Adapter Kit is also required in combination with the Thule 400XT Aero base rack system. The Thule 477 Short Roof Adaptor Kit quickly installs and allows the two cross bars to be distanced further apart from each other, allowing for a stable platform for safely carrying any items such as a canoe on the roof rack.

I then recommend attaching the Thule 579XT canoe rack. It is an excellent choice for securely transporting a canoe. It mounts directly to the 400XT Aero base rack front and rear load bars. Includes two heavy duty straps and two bow-stern tie down straps too.
